Braille Is Beautiful, and Braille Is Literacy

Six small dots can hold a word, a future, and a world.

I learned to read and write braille in first grade at the Oregon State School for the Blind, after my retinas detached when I was in kindergarten. My teacher, Mrs. Summers, may she rest in peace, gave me far more than a code. She gave me literacy. She gave me privacy, independence, and a lifeline.

During long hospital stays after numerous eye surgeries, braille connected me to stories, ideas, schoolwork, and a future I could begin to imagine. Under my fingertips, fear did not get the last word. Words did.

That is why I say this without hesitation: braille is beautiful. It is beautiful not because it is quaint, nostalgic, or inspirational, but because it is language made tangible. It gives blind people direct command of spelling, punctuation, grammar, mathematics, music, formatting, and the quiet intimacy of reading for ourselves.

Listening Is Valuable. It Is Not the Same as Reading.

I love audiobooks and screen readers. Technology has opened extraordinary doors, and blind people should have access to every useful tool. But listening and reading are different cognitive and practical acts. Speech can tell me what a sentence says. Braille lets me examine how it is written. It lets me check a name, study punctuation, scan a list, edit a document, read a speech silently, label medication, take notes in a meeting, and encounter the architecture of written language.

Sighted children are not told that audiobooks make print unnecessary. Blind children should not be told that synthetic speech makes braille optional. The right principle is not braille or technology. It is braille and technology, chosen according to the task and the person.

Braille equals literacy for blind people who read through touch. Treating it as an enrichment activity rather than a core literacy medium is the educational equivalent of handing a sighted child headphones and deciding that print no longer matters.

The Famous “10 Percent” Statistic Needs a Fact-Check

For years, advocates, journalists, agencies, and even scholarly publications have repeated some version of this claim: only 10 percent of blind people read braille. The number is memorable. It is also not supported by a current, nationally representative measure of braille literacy.

A 2022 systematic review, “How Many Braille Readers? Policy, Politics, and Perception,” traced the familiar 10 percent figure largely to two sources: a 1979 National Library Service report and American Printing House for the Blind Federal Quota data. Neither was designed to measure the braille literacy rate of the entire blind population. The researchers concluded that we do not currently have sound data showing how many braille readers there are in the United States, or whether that number is rising or falling.

This does not weaken the case for braille. It strengthens the case for better research. We should stop recirculating a dramatic statistic merely because it is dramatic. Blind children and adults deserve policy grounded in fresh evidence, clear definitions, and data that distinguish fluency, functional use, primary reading medium, dual-media reading, and occasional braille use.

There is an often quoted statistic that 90% of blind adults who are employed read braille. This comes from a 1996 study by Ruby Ryles. Ryles interviewed 74 congenitally legally blind adults and compared people who had learned to read primarily through braille with those who had learned through print. Her limited but influential study found substantially better employment and reading-related outcomes among the braille group. It demonstrated an association; it did not establish the percentage of all blind Americans who read braille, and it did not prove that braille alone caused every difference.

At Last, New Global Data Are Being Gathered

An acronym I can never seem to remember is ICEVI: the International Council for Education of People with Visual Impairment. ICEVI and the World Blind Union have launched the 2026–2027 Global Braille Literacy Campaign, “More Braille: More Empowerment.” Its goals include stronger instruction, more equitable access to hard-copy and refreshable braille, technological innovation, and research into braille’s educational, social, and economic benefits.

The campaign’s Global Braille Survey is now open and seeks worldwide information about braille’s relevance, use, benefits, and barriers. It is exactly the kind of data refresh the field has needed. Braille users, families, educators, producers, and advocates should participate and share it widely.

A second active study, led by PhD researcher Aasha Rose, examines the relationship between braille literacy and independence, social engagement, and life satisfaction among people who learned braille.

Recent U.S. research is also filling important gaps. A 2024 workplace study reported that 66.1 percent of its 304 employed blind participants used braille on the job, while 52.6 percent used refreshable braille technology at work. This was not a population estimate, the sample consisted of employed braille users, but it is powerful evidence that braille is alive in modern workplaces. Brailled It: Blind Young People Take the Camera

This September, the documentary BRAILLED IT brings braille literacy to the big screen. The film follows blind and low-vision young people at the annual Braille Challenge, and, crucially, places cameras in their hands so they help capture their own experiences. It is not simply a film about blind youth. It is cinema shaped with and by them.

The filmmakers also treated accessibility as part of the art: the film includes open audio description and open captions in a hyperlegible font. At many tour events, audiences can meet filmmakers and advocates, experience brailling demonstrations, and participate in workshops for blind and low-vision youth.

On Sunday, September 20, 2026, I will have the honor of joining the panel discussion after the Seattle screening at the SIFF Film Center. This continues a journey that included delivering the keynote address at the 2019 Braille Challenge Gala at the University of Southern California.

I want generations of braille readers, future braille readers, families, teachers, filmmakers, and allies in that room. Strong attendance tells theater owners that authentic stories by and about blind people have an audience, and that accessible presentation should be part of cinema’s front door, not a side entrance.

Growing Braille Readers: Two Programs Worth Celebrating

NFB BELL Academy

The National Federation of the Blind’s BELL Academy, Braille Enrichment for Literacy and Learning, is a summer program for blind and low-vision children, generally ages four through twelve. Through hands-on activities, braille games, crafts, nonvisual skills, self-advocacy, and time with blind adult mentors, children build competence and confidence in community.

While serving as President and CEO of the American Foundation for the Blind and living in Arlington, VA, I had the privilege of spending the day with the blind kids and adult blind mentors at the Washington, DC BELL Academy. It was great!

In 2026, programs reached thirty-one states; registration is expected to reopen in spring 2027.

This program deserves applause. Skills grow through instruction, practice, expectation, and joy. BELL does not present braille as remediation. It presents braille as something children can own, play with, and use to build their lives.

The Braille Challenge

Created by Braille Institute, the Braille Challenge is the only academic competition of its kind for blind and visually impaired students in grades one through twelve. Regional events test reading comprehension, spelling, proofreading, speed and accuracy, and tactile-graphics skills. Top students advance to international finals in Los Angeles. The 2026 finals brought fifty young readers and writers to USC, with global participation extending across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and Kenya.

Competition is only part of its magic. For one weekend, blind young people are surrounded by peers who understand the same codes, tools, frustrations, jokes, and ambitions. Braille skill is not hidden or apologized for. It is cheered.

Where Children and Adults Can Learn Braille

No single course fits everyone. Children need individualized assessment and sustained instruction from qualified teachers of students with visual impairments. Adults may learn through rehabilitation agencies, community programs, distance instruction, peer mentorship, or a combination. Useful starting points include:

In the United States, adults who are losing vision should also contact their state vocational-rehabilitation or independent-living agency. Braille is not only for children, and it is never too late to learn enough braille to label, organize, take notes, read cards, manage medication, or rediscover the pleasure of a book beneath one’s fingers.

Refreshable Braille: A Library in One Line, and a Machine with Many Tiny Moving Parts

Refreshable braille displays turn digital text into tactile characters by raising and lowering pins in braille cells. Connected to a computer or phone, or built into a notetaker, they let a reader move through email, websites, documents, code, books, and apps. Unlike speech, a display reveals exact spelling, capitalization, punctuation, spacing, and formatting. For students and professionals, that precision matters.

The promise is enormous: thousands of books can travel in one small device. The frustrations are real, too. Traditional piezoelectric braille cells are intricate and expensive. Each cell contains moving pins and actuators; dust, wear, sticky or weak pins, connectivity problems, batteries, firmware, and damaged routing buttons can interrupt access. When a display fails, a blind person may lose not a convenience but a primary channel to work or education. Repair can be slow and costly, and proprietary parts can turn a tiny mechanical failure into a very large invoice.

Prices have fallen at the low end, but access remains uneven. Affordable 20-cell devices can cost hundreds of dollars, while mainstream 40-cell displays often cost several thousand; larger devices and multiline tactile displays can cost far more. The American Foundation for the Blind’s general guide cites a range of roughly $3,500 to $15,000 for traditional displays depending on size and features, while newer models such as the Orbit family have pushed entry prices downward. Cost comparisons should always be checked against current vendor pricing.

The future is moving beyond a single line. Devices such as the Monarch, Cadence and Dot Pad point toward multiline braille and tactile graphics, allowing readers to explore spatial layouts, charts, mathematics, and diagrams. The next frontier must include affordability, durability, repairability, interoperability, and training, not merely impressive prototypes.

Two Hundred Years Young

Louis Braille was born in France in 1809 and lost his sight after a childhood accident. As a teenager, he adapted a military night-writing system into an elegant six-dot cell. He published his first braille system in 1824, at about age fifteen. Six dots can form 64 patterns when the blank cell is included, and those patterns can represent letters, numbers, punctuation, music, mathematics, science, and much more.

Braille was initially resisted by sighted authorities, but blind readers recognized its power. That history still whispers a warning: systems should not decide what blind people need without centering blind people’s knowledge and choices. My current take on the rallying cry, “nothing about us without us!” Is, “Nothing without us!”

Braille has continued to evolve. Unified English Braille brought greater consistency to English-language literary and technical notation. Digital braille files can now move across continents in seconds. The eBraille standard promises richer, more navigable digital publications. Yet the foundational experience remains exquisitely simple: a fingertip moving across a line of raised dots, turning touch into thought.

Let the Dots Rise

Braille is not beautiful because blindness is beautiful or hardship is noble. Braille is beautiful because human beings met exclusion with invention. It is beautiful because blind people claimed the written word for ourselves.

Mrs. Summers placed that claim beneath my fingers when I was a frightened little boy. Braille stayed with me through hospital rooms, classrooms, boardrooms, speeches, books, technology, leadership, and love. It did not narrow my world. It gave my world names.

So let us retire shaky statistics and build better evidence. Let us fund teachers, families, libraries, embossers, displays, repairs, research, and innovation. Let us celebrate BELL Academy, the Braille Challenge, and every adult brave enough to place a finger on a first unfamiliar dot. Let us fill the theaters for BRAILLED IT and listen when blind young people tell their own stories.

Braille is literacy. Braille is freedom. Braille is beautiful.

And six small dots are still opening an entire world.
