It is with great enthusiasm that I announce the launch of my Official Mastodon Server, a dedicated platform to engage in meaningful discussions about accessibility, inclusion, and innovation. This space represents a significant step forward in creating an open, supportive, and accessible community for individuals who are blind or visually impaired, as well as for allies and advocates of inclusion.
Why Mastodon? Why Now?
In recent years, social media has become an essential tool for communication, advocacy, and connection. For the blind community, however, not all platforms are created equal. Many mainstream social networks have struggled to maintain accessibility standards, creating barriers to participation. Mastodon, by contrast, has emerged as a platform deeply committed to accessibility, offering robust screen reader support, chronological timelines, and a welcoming culture that prioritizes inclusivity.
Mastodon stands out because it allows users to connect and share without the noise of advertisements or algorithm-driven content, making it an ideal space for thoughtful discussions. Its emphasis on community and user control aligns perfectly with my mission to create environments where everyone, regardless of ability, can thrive.
Why This Matters to the Blind Community
For the blind community, inclusive spaces are not just a convenience — they are a necessity. As I highlighted in my dissertation, “Journeys Through Rough Country: An Ethnographic Study of Blind Adults Successfully Employed in American Corporations,” blind individuals face significant barriers to inclusion, often rooted in societal misconceptions and inaccessible environments. Technology, when designed thoughtfully, can bridge these gaps, enabling connection, collaboration, and innovation.
This Mastodon server represents a space where blind users can engage without the frustrations common on other platforms. Features like the strong emphasis on alt-text for images and native compatibility with screen readers mean that everyone can participate fully.
A Personal Commitment to Accessibility
Accessibility has always been at the heart of my work, from my leadership roles at the The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. and the American Foundation for the Blind, to my consulting through Innovative Impact, LLC and the most recent aggregation of all of my initiatives through Dr. Kirk Adams. This server extends that commitment, ensuring that the tools we use to communicate reflect the values we stand for.
Moreover, this server is more than just a platform — it’s a symbol for meeting people where they are. Whether you’re a long-time advocate or someone curious about accessibility and inclusion, this space is for you. It’s a place to share ideas, ask questions, and collaborate on solutions to the challenges we face.

How To Connect
- Unlike Twitter / X you cannot follow someone on Mastodon using only their handle, like @DrKirkAdams, unless they share the same Mastodon server as you.
- If the person you are trying to follow does not share the same server as you, then you will also need to know the name of that person’s Mastodon server in order to find them via search from your own server. A full handle looks like this: https://mastodon.drkirkadams.com/@DrKirkAdams. However, simply clicking on this link will not always provide you with a follow button if that person is on a different server.
- In order to access the follow button in these cases, you will need to COPY and PASTE the full handle: into the SEARCH BOX on YOUR Mastodon server. Once you do that, a follow button will show up promptly. And I will follow you back promptly. These steps apply to all federated Mastodon accounts.
