What if businesses could solve one of their biggest challenges — finding skilled workers — by tapping into a resource hiding in plain sight? Apprenticeships offer a proven way to bridge the gap between raw potential and critical roles, especially in industries like cybersecurity. Yet, despite their success, many apprenticeship programs fail to fully embrace one of the most underutilized talent pools: people with disabilities.
As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week (November 17—23, 2024), it’s worth reflecting on the immense value apprenticeships bring. Currently, this is not only for industries struggling to fill jobs but also for individuals eager to contribute and thrive in meaningful careers. It is especially true for people with disabilities, who face systemic barriers to employment despite their ability to bring unique skills, perspectives, and loyalty to the workforce.
A Growing Talent Gap Meets Untapped Potential
Cybersecurity is one of the most critical and fastest-growing industries, exemplifying this mismatch. With roles like information security analysts projected to grow 35% faster than average by 2031 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics), the demand for skilled professionals far outpaces supply. Meanwhile, people with disabilities — who make up 26% of adults in the U.S. — remain significantly underrepresented in apprenticeship programs, accounting for only 1.9% of participants, according to the Department of Labor. We can do better.
It is not just a missed opportunity for individuals but a loss for industries desperate for innovation, diversity, and retention in their workforce. As Managing Director of Innovative Impact LLC and a strategic advisor to The APEX Program, which launches blind individuals into cybersecurity careers, I’ve seen firsthand the transformative power of these opportunities.
Why Apprenticeships for People with Disabilities Work
Inclusive apprenticeships aren’t just the right thing to do — they deliver measurable benefits for all parties:
- For Individuals: Apprenticeships provide paid, hands-on training while helping participants build in-demand skills. For people with disabilities, these programs offer a pathway to financial independence and career success. Research shows apprenticeships can increase lifetime earnings by up to $235,000 (Partnership on Inclusive Apprenticeship).
- For Employers: These programs offer a $1.47 return for every dollar invested, with graduates who demonstrate higher retention and loyalty rates (National Apprenticeship ROI). Employers gain access to a diverse and dedicated talent pool, often with innovative problem-solving skills honed by navigating challenges.
Leading the Way: Programs Making an Impact
Some organizations are already proving the value of inclusive apprenticeships:
- The APEX Program: Specializes in preparing blind individuals for cybersecurity careers through intensive training and partnerships with industry leaders.
- Partnership on Inclusive Apprenticeship (PIA): Collaborates with businesses to design apprenticeship programs that break down barriers and create equitable opportunities for people with disabilities.
These initiatives equip individuals with critical skills and demonstrate that inclusion is a win-win for workers and employers alike.
This is Your Opportunity
The world of apprenticeships has already proven its value. Now, it’s time to ensure those benefits are extended to everyone. This National Apprenticeship Week, businesses, policymakers, and advocates must come together to expand opportunities for people with disabilities. By doing so, we can close critical workforce gaps and ensure a more innovative, inclusive future.
